Getting your own phone

Type of Phone Plan

Most of us don't need a fancy phone plan to get the essentials done. Most of us need calling, texting, and some form of data plan for working with maps, social media, email and day-to-day coordination.

Many local providers can get you a phone at a low introductory cost and low month-to-month fees or pay as you need plans.

If you are not able to get on a phone plan with a parent or guardian, here are some low-cost solutions and where to find them.

  • Cricket: You can go to this link and type in your city, it will show you the store location, hours and even directions if you would like to drive or take public transport.

  • Mint Mobile: is a good option if you already have a phone but simply want your own lower cost plan. You can activate your current phone onto their network instantly.

  • Boost Mobile is another option as they have multiple centers cross Oregon. Their network is reliable and have many affordable options, some you can even start online.

  • Walmart: Local Walmart stores have Electronics Departments where you can go and buy what are commonly known as prepaid phones, meaning you buy time as you need it, instead of every month. Some phones are as low as a $35-$40 and you own the phone, and then can buy time/service for around $15-$30 as needed. This is done in-person at the store. Here are some locations.

  • CVS and other retailers. Many stores like CVS, Walgreens, and Best Buy offer similar phone products to Walmart, pre-paid phones and minutes available.
